Painting demonstration by the artist at the
exhibition, Thursday 19th July, 12.30pm
We are delighted to present a second
exhibition of work by Sarah Butterfield. This
show focuses on sport and the
determination of the individual sportsman
or woman, inspired by the Olympic
challenge, to excel over previous
achievements and aim for the highest level
in their own discipline. Bringing sport into
art is as old as the Olympics themselves,
and through the ages depictions of
sportsmen have been a vehicle for displaying the reaches of the human form.
In a 21st century idiom, this exhibition offers a glimpse of the grit and personal
devotion to sport that the Olympics are harnessing.
In the foreword to the catalogue,
Lord Coe writes:
"Sarah is passionate about painting and
capturing light and colour. She is also
passionate about sport. This exhibition
unites painting and sport in an artistic
celebration of the spirit of Olympic
endeavour. She captures the concentration
of the runner, the poise of the gymnast,
the skill of the tennis player and the raw
excitement of the Olympics."
Lord Coe, Chairman of LOCOG
Sarah Butterfield, herself an athlete and tennis player, travelled across the country, sketchpad, paints and
charcoal in hand, to observe and draw swimmers, divers, yachtsmen, athletes, rowers, gymnasts, runners, pole
vaulters, volley ball, badminton and tennis players practising their sport. The results are refreshing,
outstanding, full of light and life. Her distinguished and keen followers will not be disappointed.
