Lutz/Guggisberg 'Vehicles'    24. Feb - 8. Apr 2006

Lutz/Guggisberg | Vehicles

Exhibition from 24 February to 8 April 2006

Hours: from Tuesday to Saturday, 15–19

The exhibition Vehicles is the italian debut of the Swiss art duo Lutz/Guggisberg.

Andres Lutz (*1968) and Anders Guggisberg (*1966) live in Zurich and have worked together for about ten years. Like obsessive scientists or stable maniacs they analyze reality through objects, sculptures, constructions, installations, painting and videos. They apply their curios, ironic gaze to those treasure-packed cavernas that are museums. Display modes become models of worlds in which familiar forms intertwine with new visions.

They say: We always want to reconstruct the world that has exploded… We offer people and the market wild little islands of salvation. Where we get lost, we forget, we dream. We are absolutely lost. Then we find our way again. We forge on! We install landscapes, tombs, parlors. Sometimes they are inventions quite close to reality, we must admit…

In 2004 they showed Ich sha die Wahrheit (I’ve seen the Truth) at the Kunshalle of Zurich, an installation in which light bulbs illuminated, from inside, rickety pileworksconstructed enterely with branches, set on mirrored tables, projecting gigantic shadows on the walls. In 2005, at the Migros Museum in the same city, they showed the installation Die Brut (The Horde): an army composed of 140 birds made with pieces of partially burnt wood, cheerfully marching toward destruction, gradually burned more completely as they approach their destination.

Alongside the installations Lutz/Guggisberg are working on a large series of small images. They cut out photographs from newspapers, let paint drip on them here and there, and then develop them over time with refined drawings, thus triggering new images and stories from the news. They also create sculptures made with branches and roots, pieces of wood, stones and small objects, that remind us of chinese religious art, or objects useful for a journey through a world of personal precious possessions, cups and trophies, models of buildings or vehicles.

The exhibition in Milan is developed around a group of sculptures entitled Vehicles, exploring the tension between mobility and immobility. The sculptures, due to their immobile nature, represent carts, sleds, spaceships and meteorites in a state of suspension. but also composites of fetishes stemming from real or imaginary travels.
