Robert Chambers

Miami-based artist, Robert Chambers is known for his richly peculiar sculpture that melds science, art and sound. Laboratory methods influence the work, instilling in it an air of experimentation.

Chambers characterizes his sculptures and installations not only with descriptions of materials and objects, but also with a delightful array of sounds and gestures depicting how his works move, breathe, emit noises, interact with viewers, and take on a life of their own. Through his work, he is as much an inventor as an artist. The latest series explores the associative qualities of molecular structures. Ethanol, resembling a dog, exploits technology to create abstract forms resembling banal things.

Mette Tommerup

Mette Tommerup utilizes digital technologies to create paintings that merge the gap between traditional painting and computer made images. The central concern of the work is identity in the digital age and the side effects new technology imposes on our individual identities.

In the work, she examines topics like human cloning and psychological side effects of biological technology – such as hormone therapy. Through manipulation of visual space, the individuals in question are warped and stretched almost beyond recognition and eventually find themselves locked in place – contemplating their impossible fate.

These works will be on view at the Byron C. Cohen Gallery for Contemporary Art located at 2020 Baltimore Ave, Kansas City, Missouri. September 5 – November 1. Works by the artists represented by the Gallery can be visited via the Internet at www.artnet.com/cohen.html.
