Exhibition Opening- Thursday, November 4th, 2010, 5:30-8:30pm. Artist talk at 7pm.
Inspired through direct contact with the land of Tibet, KORA follows the direction begun by La Tumba de La Reina Roja (The tomb of the Red Queen) inspired by an incredible archeological find in the jungle near Palenque, Mexico, and Odenwald 1152, an exploration based upon a unique “cemetery forest” near Michelstadt, Germany. All three bodies of work explore the timeless themes of life, death, spirit, earth, and most of all transformation, through an intense visual program that encompasses large-scale oil paintings, digital photography, drawing, and installation art.
The exhibition is accompanied by a newly published art book. Aspects of the exhibition include: The Mount Kailash pieces- which are dramatic, sublime, and nearly as overwhelming to behold as the world’s most holy mountain itself-, the Cajas (Boxes)- which are produced with the finely powdered, brilliantly chromatic pigments sold in the markets of Asia Minor- and the Prayer Flags- which are based upon the movement and color of the Buddhist banners that mark specific points of the pilgrimage from which the exhibition takes its name.
Ricardo Mazal has exhibited extensively in the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia. In the last decade he has been honoured with ten individual museum exhibitions, among which are a retrospective at The Museo de arte Moderno in Mexico City and The Museo de Arte Contemporaneo in Monterrey. He has also shown in the prestigious Museo Nacional de Antropologia, Mexico City and The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. His work is in many museums and private collections in The United States, Mexico, Europe and Asia.
