Helmut Sturm (1932 - 2008)
Nov 23 - Dec 13,2012
Opening Nov 23rd, 6:00 pm
Schuebbe Projects is pleased to announce Helmut Sturm’s
upcoming solo exhibiton. This exhibiton shows insights into the work
of the german painter. Born 1932, his art was shaped by the change
in German post-war societ, specially in the 1960s. In 1958 Sturm
founded along with Heimrad Prem, HP Zimmer and Lothar Fischer
the artistic group SPUR, which is known for its avant-garde tribute to
German art in the post-war period. After the group disbanded in
1965, Sturm began a process of individualizing his work which
allowed him to express his own personality in his paintings. The
freshness of colours and forms, liberating heaviness and depression
into composure and generous handling characterizes his way of
painting. Today Helmut Sturm is one of the most important painters
in abstract art. Without him the development of this art movement
would be inconceivable. His work influenced many young artists of
the new generation.
In my opinion, the image is no more the reflection of reality, nor a
projection of an imagination on a surface, but a dimensionally
moving playing field: there are dashes of colours, above them lay
lines, in between them are moveable pieces of collage and a lot of
junk lifted from the ‚toy box’ of reality, stimulating a scene of
paintings. The result gives the observer enough room for his own
imagination.
