1930 Born: Allendale, SC
1947 - 1948 Attended University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC
1949 Attended an Art School in New York, NY
1954 Met the artist Robert Rauschenberg, the composer John Cage and the modern dancer Merce Cunningham
1954 Began a series of paintings based on the American flag
1956 Had his first exhbition at the Leo Castelli Gallery
1959 Recipient, The Carnegie Prize at the Biennial in Pittsburgh
1967 Recipient, Prize at the Biennial in São Paulo
1988 Recipient, Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale
1989 Honorary member of the Royal Academy, London
