About the exhibition: For her second solo exhibition at Galerie Valentin, Cécile presents more than fifteen recent abstract works, oils applied with a palette knife in thick, sensual layers. Her work entails both spontaneity and control as she explores the realm of color and its vibrations in multiple ways, through gesture and movement, or by integrating almost geometric while consistently playful shapes in her paintings. The artist invites our eyes to a cheerful, intriguing and aesthetic journey where color rules and delights us. Cécile’s works may be abstract but they are full of emotion. The title of the exhibition, “Beyond Words”, which she chose personally, exactly expresses her state of mind when she stands in front of her canvases. As she herself puts it: "I paint because words elude me, or because few of them seem adequate. The right words don’t come to me easily, especially when it comes to what’s innermost. Yet there is one language that seems to suit me: the language of colour. To me, colours seem to have a way of their own and to organize themselves. Joyfully, frenetically. Sometimes because of me, sometimes in spite of me. Arising from a gesture, from my moods, from my passion. To my greatest pleasure. Some colours echo one another, while some shapes may incidentally suggest familiar images: here an eye, there a small boat, elsewhere a seed. I let them be. They speak. They don’t represent anything. Those shapes and colours invite us to set on a journey. A journey that lies inside of us and that unveils itself discreetly before our eyes".

About the artist: Born in Belgium and a Quebecer by choice, Cecile Buysse received her Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from Concordia University in 1991 where she studied painting with Guido Molinari. Between 1989 and 1996, she participated in several studio workshops with T. Hopkins and Seymour Segal at the Saidye Bronfman Centre, as well as a workshop on silkscreen techniques at the Centre design & impression textile (centre for textile design and printing) in Montreal. Cécile has been painting for more than 20 years. She was part of several group exhibitions in Montreal, Knowlton, Baie Saint-Paul and Toronto. Her work has been shown at Galerie Valentin since the Fall of 2008.
