Walter Leblanc who started working with abstract monochromes from 1958, is renown as an Op artist, who exhibited along other members of the Zero Group from 1962.
“The basis element of his work is in the torsion which he introduced in 1959. Leblanc tightened wires on the support in a raylike pattern, with axes or in a geometric order. The artist wanted to paint by means of the energy value of light without the use of pigment, in white, black and duo-tones.” (Andre Simoens)
His artistic preoccupations identify him, undoubtedly, with the Zero Group, whose ambition was to use the artistic act to manifest a spiritual and social renewal, based on humanist values, able to resist the rising of post-war materialism. The use of light and its dynamic in Walter Leblanc’s work is an illustration of the Zero’s approach, which sought to give shape to immateriality and to make tangible the intangible.
