Reception: Thursday, July 11, 5 – 8 PM

Tayloe Piggott Gallery is pleased to present two simultaneous and related shows highlighting diverse interpretations of collage. One half of the gallery will be dedicated to Lance Letscher, with an exhibition titled The Bucket and The Well, which features new work by the acclaimed collage artist. The gallery will also play host to INTERWEAVING, a group show of select artists who utilize varied material in their art, employing distinct tactics of layering and composition. INTERWEAVING artists include Romare Bearden, Jane Hammond, Lisa Kokin, Rakuko Naito, Judy Pfaff, and Doug + Mike Starn. The shows open on Thursday, July 11 and close on August 24. Everyone is welcome to an opening reception on Thursday, July 11 from 5 – 8pm which will feature chef-created bites and beverages, as well as an interactive collage demo for all ages.

Lance Letscher: The Bucket and The Well Seldom are artists fortunate enough to have both critical acclaim and commercial success; one such exception is Lance Letscher. Although his materials, including bookbindings, old ledgers and journals, and miscellaneous paper ephemera, remain the same as in years past, Letscher is not one to rest on his laurels. He is continually experimenting with new motifs and has developed an even larger vocabulary of shapes and forms to pull from. The Bucket and The Well exhibition at Tayloe Piggott Gallery will focus on his pinwheel and block shapes in sizes that range from expansive large-scale works, to small and intimate studies.

Lance Letscher attended the University of Texas where he received both his Bachelor of Fine Arts and his Master of Fine Arts; he currently lives and works in Austin, Texas. His work is held in public and private collections around the country, and has been reviewed in Art in America, New York Observer, and Harper’s Magazine, among other publications. A full-length special-edition monograph of his work, Lance Letscher: Collage, was republished in 2013.

INTERWEAVING: select artists The simultaneous show, INTERWEAVING, will showcase a diverse group of new works from the Tayloe Piggott Gallery roster of artists, in addition to two significant works by the twentieth century American artist Romare Bearden. Bearden was one of the most inventive and original artists of his time, transforming the medium of collage into a vehicle for his own highly personal artistic expression. The Gallery artists in the exhibition each employ unique methods of layering and composition, from Jane Hammond’s hand-colored relief prints with collage, Lisa Kokin’s layered and sewn buttonworks, Rakuko Naito’s intricate paper folds, Judy Pfaff’s mixed media sculpture, and Doug + Mike Starn’s photographic prints on layers of rice paper. These works, combined with Lance Letscher’s brightly colored and complex pieces will fill the gallery with an array of color and texture.
