ROSEGALLERY is delighted to announce the first solo exhibition of paintings and works on paper by the Los Angeles based artist Summer Mann.
The exhibition will feature a selection of over forty paintings, watercolors and drawings in which Mann explores the world she inhabits, fragments of narrative and recollections of childhood. She draws inspiration and subject matter from various sources including memory, observation and found photographs. The paintings reflect the solitude and mood of the rural Midwest where Mann was raised. Primarily painting in oil on canvas but also working with watercolor, drawing and printmaking, Mann has over the last 40 years created a diverse body of work. Her painterly language has developed to include delicately drawn lines, expanses of subtle flat color and passages of thicker paint worked with a painting knife or drawn in with the end of her brush. Her color is at times muted and quiet, at others it is saturated and vibrant. She crops and rotates her images in ways to disorientate and to create new perspectives. Areas of the canvas are often deliberately thinly painted or left unpainted and she uses these negative spaces to focus and draw attention to the subject.
Taken as a whole, Mann’s body of work represents an everyday world in which its inhabitants are captured in moments of stillness, where the corporeal world merges with the spiritual. Mann asks us to address questions of identity, what it means to be alone and what is our place in the world.
Summer Mann lives and works in Los Angeles.
