Opening: Thursday, October 28, 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Brice Marden: Paintings 1961 - 1964, the next exhibition in his gallery at 526 West 22nd Street.
The exhibition consists of six paintings made at the outset of Marden’s career. Exhibited together for the first time, the works reveal a young artist in the process of establishing the elements of a painting practice that has lasted nearly five decades.
Number 1 (1962), a small canvas divided into four unequal rectangles, was included in Marden's first one-man exhibition. The painting's alternating shades of gray already display the distinctive muted palette that characterized the artist’s work through the 1970s. Arizona (1962) is another composition of rectangular forms, this time in varying browns, which includes drips and distinct brushwork, evincing Marden’s admiration for the Abstract Expressionist artists. This kind of brushwork was not seen in Marden’s work again for more than 20 years.
This exhibition complements Brice Marden’s recent paintings and drawings on display concurrently in the gallery next door at 522 West 22nd Street.
Brice Marden: Paintings 1961-1964 will be on view October 29 through December 23, 2010, from 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. at 526 West 22nd Street. For further information, please contact Jacqueline Tran at (212) 243-0200, or email [email protected]
