JAG Projects is proud to present Frequencies, a solo exhibition of paintings by Joanna Borkowska. The term frequency refers to how often an event occurs within a given period of time, and can be used to describe a wide array of phenomena, such as sound, electromagnetism—including the visible light spectrum, and even scent. Frequencies are symptomatic of movement, of all things visible and invisible.

For this exhibit Ms. Borkowska has prepared new paintings depicting a broad spectrum of frequencies from her unique perspective. The creative process was an experiment related to the frequencies of gestures, that is the pouring of different kinds of oil paint mixed with pigments onto canvas until the envisioned image appeared. This kind of work relies on Nature and the specific properties of the materials used; this method stands in stark contrast to the artist's older contemplative, textured, multilayered paintings. The common denominators of the execution of her work, however, remain the same: pace and rhythm.

Frequencies will also present a selection of paintings from Ms. Borkowska's previous projects that have never been shown in Warsaw. Through eight paintings with circles that reference the visible light spectrum plus pink (from her “8/8” audiovisual installation project), the artist addresses issues regarding the perception of color, namely the tension between the way in which people physiologically react to different hues versus their culturally bounded meanings. Another project, “Dimensions”—comprised of a panel of 32 small canvases, as well as the paintings “Cosmic Gate” and “From the Other Side”—explores concepts concerning the construction of the Universe and the role and place of humans as multidimensional beings, who, through their capacity to raise their frequencies, can connect with various dimensions.

Ms. Borkowska holds a doctorate in political science from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, where she taught politics and international relations from 2001 to 2007. She left her teaching position in order to devote all of her creative energies to painting, which has been her greatest passion for well over a decade. She has been living and creating in Warsaw, Poland, since 2011.

After debuting in 2009 with a solo exhibition in the National Museum in Szczecin, Poland, and participating in the Florence Biennale 2009, her work was displayed in another solo exhibit at Krakow's Center for Contemporary Art - Solvay in 2010. She also took part in two art fairs: Art Monaco'10 and Step09, which was held at the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan.
