OPENING: Artist’s Reception, Saturday, March 9, 6-8pm

Couturier Gallery is pleased to announce its first exhibition of South American artist, poet and writer, Arturo Mallman (b. 1953) with his high-gloss, depth and light paintings in the exhibition at-mos-pher-i-um, a show featuring translucent acrylic and resin layered works on wood panels. Arturo Mallmann: at-mos-pher-i-um runs from March 9 through April 13, 2013. The artist’s opening reception is Saturday, March 9, 6-8pm.

Although born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Mallmann and his family moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina at an early age. His work is strongly influenced by his formative years spent in the vast open plains of the pampas region of Argentina with its seemingly endless horizons and clear skies. Mallmann explains, “I guess what I liked was precisely that there was nothing in particular to look at, it was a great feeling of liberation.”

His objective in developing this layered style with its glass-like surface is to create a space that presents no barrier to the eye and that gives the illusion of depth through the building up of clear resin atop acrylic paint layers. The result is an intensity of color and three dimensional feel that draws the viewer in.

This technique is meditative for the artist. Often the works will include a small figure that represents both the artist as a small boy wandering the open grasslands of Argentina and symbolic of the human race seeking to understand our existence in a dark universe through enlightenment.

A prolific artist, Mallmann has exhibited throughout the United States. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
