The dual exhibition “Abstractions” presents recent works by German born artists Jupp Linssen and Willi Siber. Their two distinct styles create intuiting juxtapositions of color versus colorless as well as organic versus processed material.

With richly textured surfaces resembling fascinating rocks and shells, Jupp Linssen’s mixed-media paintings reference nature and ancient artifacts as well as minimalist art. Linssen has referred to painting as “the result of something that was eliminated or that which still remains,” a philosophy that can be seen in his process, which incorporates materials ranging from marble dust and concrete to paper, plaster, wood, and tin. Layers are carefully built up and scraped away, with the material itself treated as subject matter. The resulting paintings are intellectually and formally rigorous, yet project a serene, meditative, Zen-like quality that we associate with close attention to the natural world.

1957 born Linssen lives and works in Aachen and the Netherlands. He has exhibited widely in Germany and abroad, with works included in the collections of the German government, the Ludwig Forum for International Art, Aachen, and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen Museum, Düsseldorf.

The playful, meticulously constructed works of painter, sculptor and object artist Willi Siber create unique landscapes of color, shadow, and light. Originally educated in stone sculpture, Siber later shifted his focus to wood and metal, often covering his sculptures with brilliant, monochromatic hues and reflective finishes. Pattern and form are central to Siber’s work. The clean lines of his steel-and-lacquer wall sculptures seem to fold and unfold in ribbons and knots, while his wood panels covered with metal and epoxy resemble rare, intricate coral. Each piece seems part of an endlessly expansive system, imbued with a sense of wonder and possibility.

Siber was born in 1949, and earned his degree from the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. An internationally exhibiting artist since 1990, he has shown his work at galleries, museums, and art fairs across Europe and the U.S. as well as in Seoul, Hong Kong, and Australia.
