BOCA RATON, FL (August 17, 2011) – Elaine Baker Gallery announces a solo exhibition of sculpture by Harald Schmitz-Schmelzer. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 13th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at Gallery Center.
Harald Schmitz-Schmelzer’s cast acrylic works bridge the gap between painting, sculpture and science. The artist’s studio, like an experimental lab, is where he stretches the limits of color perception. Through the use of an acrylic carrier substance, a binding agent and pigments the artist is able to create his uniquely layered objects.
Like a painter, Schmitz-Schmelzer begins with color in liquid form, but instead of applying it to the surface of a canvas, he instead pours it into a mold. Taking into account opacity, hue and thickness, layer upon layer of acrylic is added until it reaches the desired shape. The outcome is an encyclopedic array of colors that vary depending on ambient light and the angle at which they are seen.
For the past two decades Elaine Baker Gallery has been synonymous with contemporary art, and is a respected resource for international collectors, museums, designers and corporations. The gallery offers works by established and mid-career artists, while maintaining an inventory of strong secondary market work. In January 2010, Elaine Baker and her daughter Deborah Sponder opened a second space at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. This new partnership houses a major sculpture program and is dedicated to presenting museum quality sculpture for acquisition.
