BESCHREIBUNG:
|
José Gallegos y Arnosa was born in Jerez, Spain. Initially trained as an architect, he turned to painting once his considerable talent had been noticed by the director of the Academy of Fine Art in Madrid. After graduating, he travelled to Morocco to find subjects for his first body of work. His first solo exhibition back in Madrid was highly praised, but he soon moved to Italy, finally settling in Rome in 1881. Although living in Italy, the subject matter of his early paintings remained primarily Spanish. However, he soon became best known for his intricate interiors of Spanish, Italian and Moorish religious buildings, subjects that reflected his architectural background. The elaborate costumes and finely detailed buildings suited his technique, and his paintings were exhibited as far afield as Madrid, Rome, Berlin, London, Munich, Boston and Prague. He was awarded gold medals medals at a number of exhibitions, notably in Venice and at the International Art exhibition of Berlin in 1891, where the gold medal was awarded by William II the German Kaiser.
Today, his work can be found in numerous galleries in Europe and both North and South America.
