In the early 1890s, café concerts, or cafés chantants as they were also called, were increasing in popularity. These small theater spaces, where the audience sat at tables and drank while songs and skits were presented on a small stage, were springing up all over Montmartre. Lautrec and his friends developed the habit of following a favorite singer or dancer from caf' conc' to music hall as the performer moved from place to place. Here, the bulky figure of the comedian Caudieux is shown mid-dance. That same year, Lautrec would also complete a poster of the performer.
