L’Atelier sur la terrasse de Mirmande shows André Lhote’s dexterity with composition – the diagonals are key here, with the sweep of the bird’s back across the centre and the rigid triangle of the easel to the right of the work. Even the mountains in the extreme background form an important part of the whole.
