BESCHREIBUNG:  REFERENCE: Cherpin 8; Johnson 24

DISCUSSION:
Created in c. 1896-7, this original lithograph in black is from the total unnumbered, unsigned edition of 300 in black and grey on Arches Ingres paper, printed by August Clot, Paris. Originally intended for the unpublished L’Album d’estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard (1898).

Portrayed here in three-quarter view, the artist, Paul Cézanne appears to be depicting himself in reflection; with his easel before him and his gazed and poignant stare, we are able to see the master in a more profound and humanist state. The detail of his dress including his hat, vest, suspenders and overcoat, are drawn with accuracy and expressive shading. The darkened areas toward the bottom help anchor the overall composition of his portrait while Cézanne gradually lightens the intensity of his stroke as our eyes are led up to his face.

ABOUT THE FRAMING:
This work is framed in a beautiful Italian-style moulding with ornate vegetal relief forms that are accented by a silvery-gold finish. The contrasting grey and gold woods highlight the subtle tonal qualities of the image. Completed with white, linen-wrapped mats, a matching gold inner fillet, and the plaque of the artist’s name and dates on the mat; set behind an archival Plexiglas® cover.
