Stereolithography is a process of creating “rapid prototypes”, allowing one to “print” three dimensional structures from a CAD computer model. The computer model is sliced into very thin layers, and each layer is created through the use of a laser which photochemically hardens the material being used. After each layer is hardened, it is lowered down one thickness so that the new layer may be traced on the surface. Upon completion, the physical model replicates the CAD computer model to the finest detail.
The process was brought to the marketplace by Chuck Hull in 1986. He founded a company based on the technology called 3D systems, and launched the industry of rapid prototyping. Rapid prototyping is used by manufacturers all over the world as a quick way to realize CAD models, regardless of structural complexity, for testing and product examination. With his “Solid” series, Jouin embraces the technology not as a method to create a prototype, but as a new method of manufacturing.
