BESCHREIBUNG:  From the series: Ninguem e de ninguem

The works on the site above are all from the series: Ninguem e de ninguem (No One Belongs to Anyone) by Rogerio Reis a distinguished photojournalist and conceptual photographer in his native Brazil and abroad. The title mocks the current preoccupation with the ever growing attempts to restrict photography of anyone by anyone anywhere in public without permission or authorization for reproduction or publication. The irreverence of the work reflects the absurdity of everyman or everywoman perceiving himself or herself as a potential paparazzi victim.

Reis, an internationally recognized figure in photography, was the 1999 winner of Brazil's National Prize for Documentary Photography, and one of the founders of Brazil's first and most important professional photo bank, Tyba. His work has been exhibited in Brazil, the U.S., London, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and elsewhere. His powerful series including Carnival on Canvas, Man/Machine: Train Surfers , Tem um cheiro de pneu queimado no ar (There's a Smell of Burnt Tire in the Air) and Ninguem e de Ninguem, have all been critical successes. The complete series of images of Ninguem e de ninguem was shown in Paris last fall and is in the permanent collection of the Maison Europeene de la Photographie. Reis's photographs are in the permanent collections of the Danforth Museum of Art,MA, USA, Musee Francaise de la Photographie, Maison Europeene de la Photographie, Harvard University art Museums, Museu de Arte de Rio de Janeiro, Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo, and the Worcester Art Museum among others. His work frequently appears in print and online magazines including Newsweek, Geo, Paparazzi' among others. His bibliography includes the monograph, Na Lona, Rio de Janeiro, in 2001, Editorial Aeroplano. His major journalistic assignments include that of Photo Editor of Rio's Jornal do Brasil for 5 years. Rogerio, the editor is portrayed by an actor as a key figure in Fernando Meirelles's film, Cidade de Deus (City of God) based on a book by Paulo Lins. He has participated in numerous artistic and cultural projects including Unesco's Our Place, the Photographic Celebration of the World's Heritage. Reis is a sophisticated and accomplished artist, but also a person of strong commitment to social justice. He has worked with the Grupo Cultural AfroReggae (AfroReggae Cultural Group) which seeks to redirect activities of at- risk youths via education in the arts. Most recently he founded a collaborative non-profit dedicated to providing opportunities for studying, producing and exhibiting photography for members of the public in, Santa Tereza, Rio's, historical district. He is equally distinguished as an artist and a personality.
