A fine rich impression of this iconic masterpiece which is at once cubist and expressionist.
After Feininger saw cubist paintings for the first time, in 1911 during a brief visit to Paris, his approach to art was transformed – he adopted a system of dislocated planar surfaces, his own cubist idiom, and stayed with this style for the rest of his career. In this early example of this style he applied the approach to Gothic structures – which he loved. The Gate is the Town Gate of Ribnitz; Ribnitz is on the Baltic coast in Mecklenburg, northeast of Rostock, in a region where Feininger often spent his summers.
