BESCHREIBUNG:
|
Brush and spatter zincograph with scraper, printed in 5 colors. Further text added by another hand THE/AULT & WIBORG CO/MAKERS OF FINE PRINTING/AND LITHOGRAPHIC/INKS/CINCINNATI-NEW YORK-CHICAGO. Commissioned by the Ault & Wiborg Co., Chicago and Cleveland.
This was Lautrec’s smallest colour lithograph, made for an American ink manufacturer, and it shows Emilienne d’Alencon and Gabriel Tapie de Celeyran at the Cabaret des Decadents. The study Dortu P.615, signed and dated 1896, also bears the inscription: ‘for the Ault and/Wiborg Co./Cincinnati. The edition of the poster with full lettering was printed in America after the zinc plates—which are now in the Art Institute of Chicago—had been sent there.
NOTE: In 1946, the Art Institute of Chicago Print and Drawing Club published for its members an edition of 100 impressions of this poster on china paper, numbered x/100. These images were printed offset and the zinc plates and proofs of this re-edition are in the print room of the Art Institute of Chicago.
A very fine impression. The paper in very good condition. The colors very strong and vibrant.
