Art Web site collects subscribers and profits
Artnet breaks down dealer resistance and changes the way art is bought and sold
By Miriam Kreinin Souccar (Excerpt)

It's taken a decade, but Artnet has become a force that dealers in the clubby art market can no longer ignore. One of the rare survivors of the Internet bubble, when more than 100 art sites were created, Artnet is changing the way that pieces are bought and sold.

The Manhattan-based site--which specializes in information, from the price history of every artwork sold at auction to an inventory of galleries around the world--is democratizing the market. Since collectors can find out what galleries paid for the art that they are hawking, dealers can no longer mark up prices as high as they'd like. In turn, dealers have access to more collectors than ever before.

"Artnet has made it a much more competitive market, and one where individuals are getting fairer deals," says Jonathan Binstock, curator of contemporary art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
