Baum was a pupil of W.T. Trego and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After receiving his degree, he went on to work as an editor, illustrator, and contributing artist for several publications. In addition to this, he was the director of the Allentown Museum and head of the Kline-Baum Art School in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
