1865   Born to John and Theresa Gatewood Cozad. Members of the family all took on different surnames following a family scandal: John Sr. had fled Nebraska, the family’s second home, after killing a man in self defense.
1883   The family moved to New York, then to Atlantic City, New Jersey
1886   Enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
1889 - 1891   Lives in Europe for 3 years
1892   Moves back to Philadelphia
1895   Makes his third trip to Europe
1900 - 1902   Teaches at the Veltin School in New York
1902 - 1908   Teaches at the New York School of Art
1915 - 1927   Teaches at the Art Students League
1929   Dies at the age of sixty-four.
