1831   Born: November 11th in Durham, England
1853   Studied in Newcastle-on-Tyne and in the Royal Scottish Academy, where he received a medal in the antique class in 1853.
1853   Studied at the National Academy of Desing in New York: went on to receive medals in Boston and San Francisco.
1863   Chosen a mere-bet of the National Academy
1866   Became one of the original members of the Water-color society, serving for several years as its vice-president
