Malerin, Zeichnerin, Bildhauerin, Performance- und Installationskünstlerin. Ghada Amer (ägyptisch, 1963) wird in Kairo geboren. Als sie elf Jahre alt ist, geht ihre Familie nach Frankreich, wo Amer in Paris und Nizza zur Schule geht. 1989 erwirbt sie den Master of Fine Arts an der École nationale supérieure d’art in Nizza und beginnt in den 1990er Jahren, ihre künstlerischen Arbeiten auszustellen. Ghada Amer arbeitet überwiegend mit den Mitteln der Malerei, bezieht aber auch Zeichnung, Bildhauerei, Performance und Installation in ihr Schaffen ein. Ihr zentrales Thema ist die Gleichstellung der Frau und die weibliche Sexualität. Mit Stickereien auf pornografischen Bildern beispielsweise untergräbt sie den typischen Gebrauch solcher Bilder, indem sie auf weibliche Lust und die Rolle der Frau anspielt. Amers Werke wurden auf der Whitney Biennale und im PS1 Contemporary Art Center in New York, auf der Biennale in Venedig, im Museum Fridericianum in Kassel, auf der Johannesburg Biennale und auf der Istanbul Biennale gezeigt. Ghada Amer lebt und arbeitet in New York.
